3 Common Electric Furnace Repair Needs

An air conditioner is sitting in a room next to a window.

If you have an electric furnace, you need to be able to identify the signs of some common problems. Below, we’ve listed three of the top reasons that we get calls for electric furnace repair in Estacado, OR. If your electric furnace begins showing some of the same signs, you’ll know that you need to call for service. Otherwise, you may wind up accidentally ignoring potentially serious problems because you don’t realize that something is wrong.

Faulty Thermostat

Many times a malfunctioning furnace is actually the fault of the thermostat. If your thermostat does not communicate correctly with your furnace for temperature changes, it may seem like your electric furnace is malfunctioning or not working completely—but it’s actually the thermostat failing to signal the furnace to turn on and off at the correct times.

When your furnace is having unusual problems, the thermostat is one of the first places we check. We want to make sure it is calibrated correctly and that it has a full battery charge. If your thermostat is the problem, it is usually a simple fix. However, if your thermostat is significantly older, we may need to replace it completely with a more modern model.

Difficulty Starting

Another common complaint we get is furnaces that won’t start. When this happens, it could be for a couple of different reasons. The first is the capacitor on the furnace that gives it a little bit of an extra boost to get started up for a heating cycle. As time goes on, this capacitor can wear out and lose its ability to hold a charge. Thankfully, it is a relatively inexpensive component to replace if needed.

If that’s not the problem, it may be the blower motor. When the blower motor has issues, your furnace may turn on for the beginning of a heating cycle, but eventually shut off due to overheating. This happens because heat gets trapped inside of the system instead of moving through and blowing out into your home.

Airflow Problems

The third most common complaint we get calls for is an issue with airflow. If you’re feeling weak airflow coming out of the air vents around your home, first check the air filter to see if it needs to be changed. If it is full, it is likely blocking airflow into the system, and thus affecting airflow going out of your system.

Alternately, you may feel strong airflow, yet it is not particularly hot. When this happens, there’s likely an issue with the burners that create heat for your home. They may be malfunctioning, or they may be dirty enough that the buildup is preventing heat from transferring into the air. You can always turn your furnace off and allow it to cool down completely. Then open the cabinet to wipe down the burners. If this doesn’t help, you likely need to call our team for professional service.
