Why Won’t Your Heat Pump Turn On?

When your heat pump refuses to turn on for a heating cycle, the result is a disruption to your comfort and your daily life as you plan for an emergency repair appointment. You may be left with questions about what exactly went wrong. From thermostat issues to the reversing valve, there are a variety of reasons for a malfunctioning heat pump.

Before you panic about heat pump issues, give our team a call for heat pump repair in Portland, OR. You can also keep reading to learn how to figure out why your heat pump isn’t turning on and troubleshoot the issue before calling us.

Troubleshoot the Reversing Valve

The reversing valve may be the issue if your heat pump works in one mode or the other. For example, if you’ve tried to switch over to heating mode and it won’t turn on for a cycle, change your thermostat back to cooling mode. Set the temperature lower than what it currently is and see if your heat pump turns on.

If it turns on and begins cooling your home, then the reversing valve is likely the culprit. Our team may need to clean and lubricate the valve or replace it entirely. Either way, we can fix it and get your heat pump working again in both heating and cooling modes.

Check Your Thermostat

It’s also possible that your thermostat is to blame. You can gently take the cover off of your thermostat to look inside and see if it is particularly dirty. If so, you can use a soft bristle brush to wipe away any buildup and see if that helps. You can also try changing out the thermostat batteries.

If these things don’t work to get your heat pump turning on again, call our team for service. It’s possible that your thermostat is miscalibrated. When this happens, communication is interrupted between your thermostat and your heat pump. It may not send the proper signals for your heat pump to turn on and off.

Check the Circuit Breaker

While this is a less frequent problem, it does happen from time to time. It’s possible that the circuit breaker to your heat pump got tripped and turned off power to your heat pump as a safety precaution. Check your circuit breaker box to see if the switch is tripped for your heat pump.

You can try to flip it back over and see if that works to turn your heat pump back on. If it does, great! However, if your heat pump turns off again because the circuit breaker trips, then you need to leave it off and call us for service. The circuit breaker only trips when there is an unusual surge of power to your heat pump.

If this is happening repeatedly, our team needs to check it out and address the problem. Letting it continue on could leave your home and family at risk.
