We have certainly seen some drastic weather this season. It put everyone’s heaters to the test. After the extreme cold we experienced, your furnace may be feeling the hurt. Now is an ideal time to get your system checked out. After a period of more intense heating, your system may need a professional furnace repair in Beaverton, OR to keep it going.

You love when your furnace works the way it is supposed to. We’ll explain if and when you should schedule repairs to keep your system running the way you want.

“Do I Need Repairs If My Furnace Is Still Working?”

A need for repairs doesn’t always translate to a system breakdown. One of the biggest reasons to get furnace repairs as soon as you notice an issue is because it can prevent a breakdown. The answer, then, is, “Yes!” Scheduling repairs for a furnace that is still operable can help keep it that way and prevent an early replacement.

“How Can I Tell My Furnace Needs Repairs?”

We can agree that you don’t want to wait until your furnace breaks down to get it repaired. The question now is how to figure out if you need repairs before it costs you the operation of your furnace. We’ve listed some common symptoms to watch for here:

  • Concerning Noises . You turn on your furnace and notice that it is making a new noise. That’s not a good sign. Noises like rattling, clanging, hissing, screeching or booming are all indicators that you need a repair soon. Often these are some of the first warning signs of an issue that will rapidly worsen if it isn’t addressed.
  • Odd Smells . Running the furnace shouldn’t be something that makes the house smelly. If your furnace has started to create acrid burning smells or a smell like rotten eggs, then it is a good idea to turn it off and have it checked out. These smells are alerting you to problems that could prove hazardous to your home and health.
  • Heat Distribution . Some rooms or areas are warm while others feel like they get no heat at all. Make sure the vents to the cold areas are open and unblocked. If this doesn’t solve the issue, then it is likely there is a bigger problem to deal with such as a leak in your ductwork.
  • Energy Use . Have you noticed a large spike in your energy bills that can’t be explained by changes in the price of electricity or increased use of your furnace? This means your furnace needs expert attention.

“Should I Bother Repairing an Older Furnace?”

Believe it or not, there is a certain line that your furnace can cross that will make a replacement a better choice than a repair. Again, you don’t want to wait until your system breaks down but you also shouldn’t have to spend money on a repair to a system that needs to retire. If your furnace is over 12 years old and needs repairs once a year, then your money is better spent upgrading.
