4 Signs You Need a New Gas Furnace

When it comes to keeping your Wilsonville home cozy during Oregon’s chilly fall and winter months, a reliable gas furnace is essential. But even the most durable heating systems don’t last forever. If your furnace has been struggling to keep up—or showing signs of aging—it might be time to consider a replacement.

We specialize in expert gas furnace installation in Wilsonville, OR, helping homeowners stay warm, energy-efficient, and worry-free.

Not sure if it’s time for an upgrade? Here are four common signs that you need a new gas furnace.

1. Your Furnace Is Over 15 Years Old

The average lifespan of a well-maintained gas furnace is about 15 years. As your furnace nears or surpasses this age range, its efficiency naturally declines, and it becomes more prone to costly breakdowns. Even if your older furnace still runs, it may be working overtime to provide the same level of comfort, leading to higher energy bills and inconsistent heating.

Modern furnaces are far more efficient than systems manufactured nearly two decades ago. Upgrading to a high-efficiency model can significantly lower your energy consumption and save you money month after month.

Tip: If your furnace is 15 years or older, it’s wise to schedule an inspection to evaluate its condition and start planning for a replacement.

2. Rising Energy Bills and Frequent Repairs

If you’ve noticed your utility bills creeping up—despite regular furnace maintenance—your heating system/furnaces/gas–furnace-installation could be losing efficiency. Over time, wear and tear on components like the blower motor, heat exchanger, and ignition system make your furnace work harder, consuming more gas and electricity.

Frequent repair needs are another red flag. If you’ve had to call for furnace repairs more than once in the past couple of years, investing in a new system may be more cost-effective than continuing to patch an aging unit.

General Rule: If repair costs are approaching 50% of the value of a new furnace, it’s smarter financially to replace it.

3. Inconsistent Heating and Poor Comfort Levels

One of the most frustrating signs of a failing furnace is uneven heating. Are some rooms in your home freezing cold while others feel too warm? Does it seem like your furnace is running constantly but still not reaching the temperature set on your thermostat?

These symptoms indicate that your furnace may be struggling to distribute heat effectively. Aging furnaces often lose their ability to maintain consistent airflow and temperature control, leaving you with hot and cold spots—and less comfort overall. Upgrading to a new, properly sized furnace will restore even, efficient heating throughout your entire home.

4. Strange Noises or Unusual Smells

While it’s normal for your furnace to make a little noise when it starts up, loud banging, rattling, squealing, or humming noises are cause for concern. These sounds often signal mechanical problems like loose belts, broken blower motors, or damaged heat exchangers. Similarly, if you notice unusual odors—like a strong smell of gas, burning dust, or a musty scent—it’s important to take action immediately.

Some smells may indicate serious safety risks, such as a cracked heat exchanger, which can leak dangerous carbon monoxide into your home. Any unusual sounds or smells warrant a professional evaluation. If major components are failing, replacement may be the safest and most cost-effective solution.
