Air Handler Problems

One of the biggest tribulations homeowners have with their HVAC systems is that they don’t realize when problems occur. In fact, some people simply assume that decreased efficiency is normal, so they don’t bother calling anyone in to check on their HVAC system. Instead, they unnecessarily spend hundreds dollars on their energy bill until inevitably their air handler breaks down completely. So, it’s incredibly important that you can recognize the signs of a problem well before the problem becomes too much to repair.

Your air handler contains many components. Every air handler has a blower, mixing chamber and a collection of air filters. It draws fresh air in from outside and circulates it into your air supply, but only after filtering out the unwanted contaminants that tend to come in from outside. You may have upgraded your filtration device with more advanced indoor air quality products as well, which will also need to be checked regularly to avoid a breakdown in your system.

In addition to the air circulation parts, air handlers often contain humidity control devices. Heated air especially tends to be devoid of humidity in the winter, so upgrades to the air handlers allow them to add humidity before it enters your ducts – this means you can remain comfortable but your furnace doesn’t need to produce as much heat. In the summer, a dehumidifier may be installed to supplement the natural dehumidification provided by your air conditioner.

Noticing Air Handler Issues

When any of these parts stop working properly, it’s likely you need repairs. Specifically, you should look for any signs that your heating and cooling system is no longer providing clean, fresh air to every part of your home. Poor circulation, especially to the upper floors, may be a sign that your blower is not working properly. Decreased air quality may be a sign of clogged or damaged filters. Excess or inconsistent humidity may be a sign of a problem in your humidifier or dehumidifier.

Whatever the issue, it’s important that you take note of all symptoms and when they occur. With so many moving parts in your air handler and HVAC system, describing issues with as much detail as possible will make it easier for your technician to diagnose and make repairs.
